Frequency of Each Illocutionary Act of Each Character

This is the overall result from every character in Kevin’s body.

As you can see from the graph, the characters use Assertive mostly because it is the easiest way to continue the whole story within 2 hours.

So, we will focus more on Directive, Commissive and Expressive ,and talk in details of each characters.

Dennis

Dennis is the main character who normally used assertive to run the story. But you can see that it followed by the used of Directive around19%. This is because he had Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. He obsessed with cleanliness. He always orders other people to clean by using direct speech.

Barry

Another important identity is Barry. We can see from the pie chart that the second most used speech act is Expressive (the green one). The reasons this identity expresses a lot of expressive speech acts are that he is a fashionista and the representation of LGBTQ+ people.

Patricia

And another identity is Miss Patricia. We can notice that she used Directive in the percentage of 22.2 which is the second most used. After the research, our group found that she used a lot of directives because she’s quite an aged woman and likes to try to keep the other personalities in check. Moreover, she always orders the others and our group thinks that this identity is similar to Dennis that tries to be the leader.

Hedwig

This is a significant character named Hedwig. He is a 9-year-old boy who usually uses directive speech acts. He sometimes commands people to do what he wants in order to not get caught. And, Hedwig can also take control of Kevin’s body whenever he wants. But his directive speech acts don’t do many effects on the other character since he’s only 9 years old.

The Beast

The beast is the 24th identity of Kevin. We found that he doesn’t speak commissive or the directive acts at all since he’s not a human. He doesn’t express the feeling at all and he usually used the physical force instead of the directive acts.

Kevin

This is the real identity of Kevin which comes up at the end. He’s the main character in this story. As he was growing up, her mother maltreated him and abused him so much. This is the cause of his DID. Most of his speeches are about telling others to kill him. This shows that he is weak and depressed.
